Blood culture-negative infective endocarditis with thalassemia and neurological complication: A dangerous combination

Background: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening systemic disease that mostly affects people with valvular heart disease, prosthetic valves, or intracardiac devices. Infective endocarditis is a dangerous cardiac involvement in thalassemia patients. Thus, a multidisciplinary approach is important to provide efficient and effective therapy. Case presentation: A 31-year-old man cam...

Blood culture-negative endocarditis

Blood culture-negative endocarditis (BCNE) may represent up to 70% of all endocarditis cases, depending on series. From 2001 to 2009, we implemented in our laboratory a multimodal diagnostic strategy for BCNE that included systematized testing of blood, and when available, valvular biopsy specimens using serological, broad range molecular, and histopathological assays. A causative microorganism...

Blood Culture–Negative Endocarditis, Morocco

We investigated the microorganisms causing blood culture-negative endocarditis (BCNE) in Morocco. We tested 19 patients with BCNE by serologic methods, molecular methods, or both and identified Bartonella quintana, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus equi, and Streptococcus oralis in 4 patients. These results highlight the role of these zoonotic agents in BCNE in Morocco.

Antibiotic resistance pattern of bacterial agents isolated from blood culture of patients with infective endocarditis

Background: Infective endocarditis occurs due to the presence of microorganisms in the endocardium or the heart valves. Nowadays, infective endocarditis is still a major cause of death with an incidence rate of 5 to 7.9 per 100,000 populations. The aim of the study was to determine antibiotic resistance pattern of bacterial agents isolated from blood culture of patients with infective endocardi...

Current issues in the diagnosis and management of blood culture-negative infective and non-infective endocarditis.

Diagnosis and management of blood culture-negative endocarditis constitute a formidable clinical challenge and a systemic approach is necessary for a successful outcome. Blood cultures are negative in endocarditis due mainly to preceding antibiotic administration or to fastidious slow-growing organisms. Less so, non-infective endocarditis is a paraneoplastic manifestation or may occur in associ...
